Testing all afternoon

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Mom is having all her test today to determine the extend of the cancer and if she is well enough for surgery next week.  Blood,  EKG,  X-Ray, and CT scans are all being done this afternoon.  I’m not sure if you have been to M.D. Anderson recently but the walk between the main building and the Mays clinic is no small feat.   It looks to be about 3/4 a mile each way and I’ve had to walk in 3 times now, but at least we are getting some good exercise.

All that’s left is her CT scan and I’m here in the waiting room waiting for her name to be called.  I’ll post more when I know more.

M.M.M.T.

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

I found out the actual form of uterine cancer Mother has and it is called a malignant mixed Müllerian tumor.  It’s a relatively rare form as it accounts for only 2% to 5% of all tumors originating in the uterus.  She was already scheduled for a hysterectomy on the 16th of this month at M.D. Anderson and this should continue as planned.  The latest plan is to do what is called a radical hysterectomy and remove surrounding tissue and lymph nodes.  Once the CT scan is finished tomorrow and the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and lymph nodes are removed on the 16th we will know a stage and prognosis.  M.M.M.T. normally requires chemotherapy and radiation regardless of the stage so she should expect to receive such treatments.

She was in better spirits today as she helped deal with Dad’s slight setbacks.  Feel free to give her a call and let her know you’re thinking about her anytime.  Tomorrow I will be with her all afternoon and evening as she has a battery of test for further diagnostic and surgery prep.

Strange shopping trip

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Talk about an interesting trip to the ole Wally-World.  I was driving Mom back from having looked at and being disappointed with the rehab facilities for Dad when she wanted to stop to purchase a few needed items.  While parking she received a call from her doctor at M.D. Anderson with the results of her biopsy.  I sat in the parking spot while she discussed the situation and assumed everything was O.K. by the attitude she had while on the phone.  It wasn’t until she ended the call that she showed the news on her face and I knew things were not as hoped.  To the doctors credit he remembered Mother’s situation and even asked about how Dad was doing.

She insisted we go ahead and get the things we stopped by Walmart for which made for the most bizarre shopping trip.  She had just found out that she had a rare form of uterine cancer and that depending on the results of her CT scan on Thursday she might need treatments, chemo & radiation, after the already scheduled surgery.  Us two were the only ones to know this news and browsing the makeup isle with her for her favorite brands as if nothing happened was surreal.   She doesn’t remember the exact name of the type of uterine cancer but I will try and find out tomorrow.   If you want to call and talk with her just comment and I’ll send you a message with the best way to contact her.

Welcome
